Life is hard, but what if it were like a video game?
To level up your character and collect drop loots.
Turns out, it’s possible. And more than that, it’s very effective.
But first, let’s understand why games are so powerful.
The addiction of games
Games like clickers and RPGs are very powerful because they use different techniques:
instant correlation between cause and effect (when you purchase a better armor, you see the improvement right away)
randomized rewards that prevent monotony (every drop loot is different)
perceived progress through levels
clear goals and objectives (beating a monster, getting to the last level)
We can use these features to make our “game of life” addictive as well.
How to do it
The goal of this “game of life” is to complete your tasks to gain points that you can use to level up your character. Good habits give you money, while bad ones take from your balance.
To counteract bad habits, we need to make them less appealing and satisfying. For example, you can do this by giving a harsher punishment (like lowering your HP that can cause death and restarting the whole game).
There is a video of how you can implement this in Notion:
Also, there are apps available that use type of mechanism to make you more productive. (e.g. Habitica)
